  • Anthony Horowitz is the author of the number one bestselling Alex Rider books and The Power of Five series. He has enjoyed huge success as a writer for both children and adults, most recently with the latest adventure in the Alex Rider series, Russian Roulette and the highly acclaimed Sherlock Holmes novel, The House of Silk. His latest novel, Moriarty, is also set in the world of Sherlock Holmes and was published in October 2014. Anthony was also chosen by the Ian Fleming estate to write the new James Bond novel which will be published next year. Anthony has won numerous awards, including the Bookseller Association/Nielsen Author of the Year Award, the Children's Book of the Year Award at the British Book Awards, and the Red House Children's Book Award. In 2014 Anthony was awarded an OBE for Services to Literature. He has also created and written many major television series, including Injustice, Collision and the award-winning Foyle's War.

Anthony Horowitz planned to bring his internationally bestselling Alex Rider sequence (28 languages, 13 million English language sales) to a close in 2011 with the ninth Alex Rider novel, Scorpia Rising. But Anthony found that he had unfinished business with the world of Alex Rider and with one character in particular… Yassen Gregorovich, the assassin dispatched to execute Alex in the very first Alex Rider adventure Stormbreaker (2000). Thanks to the Alex Rider books in particular, Anthony Horowitz is widely credited with inspiring a generation (of boys) to read. In the nine Alex Rider novels, we see how one 14-year-old boy is turned, with persistent reluctance, into a hero. In Russian Roulette, we jump to the other side of the mirror as we see how a killer is formed.

  • The fifth and final book in Anthony Horowitz's Power of Five series is indeed epic: the most ambitious he's yet written. Grander and bleaker than the Alex Ryder novels with which he made his name, it's about the Five: a group of supernaturally gifted teenagers who must save the world from ancient forces of evil known as the Old Ones.

If you thought the only Jewish connection to the new film Stormbreaker was the presence of actress Alicia Silverstone and Stephen Fry, then think again. The action blockbuster, which follows the adventures of teenage spy Alex Rider, is in fact based on a series of novels by Jewish author Anthony Horowitz.

Born in 1956 in Stanmore, Horowitz had a colourful childhood – describing himself as a "miserably unhappy and overweight child", he began writing when he was a child, with many of his tales inspired by his experiences at a strict boarding school in North London. He also became a huge fan of James Bond movies – which comes as little surprise, given that the character of Alex Rider appears to be the teenage equivalent of 007. He was also inspired by the bedtime stories his mother would tell him.
