  • Women Coming out of Straight Marriage is a support group that meets every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at Pacific Center at 6:30 PM. The support group is a crucial early step for many women starting their coming out process. Coming out has enough strains, stress and fear to be overly taxing for any person embarking on a journey to bring their true, authentic self into the world. Being in a straight marriage, sometimes with kids, sometimes with a hostile partner and family, increases that stress exponentially.

The Pacific Center for Human Growth in Berkeley has supported the LGBTQ community since 1973. We now offer a peer-led support group for Women Coming Out of Straight Marriage. Coming out at any age can be very difficult. For those already living an established heterosexual identity, possibly married or with children, the process becomes uniquely complicated. Some of the women who attend the group are just discovering and talking about who they might be. Others are newly divorced and trying to create community for themselves in their new identity. Most are somewhere in between. There is no pressure to act or to become anything; we simply offer a welcoming place to discuss and sort through these feelings without fear of judgment. Though the Pacific Center offers a full range of counseling services, this is not a therapy group; the facilitators are women who have been through this difficult process. The group meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of every month from 6:30-8:30PM. For more information, visit .

Richard Cohens Coming Out Straight

I sought refuge in the arms of men. I had several boyfriends in college, and then a lover of three years. However, it was not enough. I wanted to marry and have a family. I had a religious conversion experience that helped me leave the homosexual lifestyle. Eventually, I met Jae Sook and she became my wife. That was not enough. I had repressed my same-sex attractions. I needed to heal my wounds and fulfill unmet needs. I found this through therapy, support groups, mentors, friends, and my faith. In this way, I was able to change and finally come out straight. I share my story to give you some idea of where I have been, where I am, and the knowledge that change is possible.
