  • I'm just a guy who loves Field Notes Brand notebooks. I'm on a journey to use one of each edition, starting with FNC-27 Workshop Companion. I'll end up eventually using the first colors edition, the coveted Butcher Orange. I am not affiliated with Field Notes, I just love to use their notebooks.

As expected it took about a month to complete the first notebook on my , the Workshop Companion #05 Plumbing notebook. Overall it’s only my 14th completed Field Notes Colors Edition Notebook. I must say, I love the Workshop Companion Edition! It’s a sturdy book made for sturdy jobs!

The workshop companion gives background into the topics addressed by the expressive design workshop, specifically the tools and methodologies covered and used. The aim of the companion is to have a practical reference, describing tools you can apply, and guiding through the product design process using the canvas. The companion was developed for the workshop “Expressive Product Design”, yearly offered to Industrial Design students of the Zurich Design Academy, and printed & published as handout to the workshop. ISBN: 978-88-906724-5-3.

You can download the workshop companion here. Alternatively, you are invited to request a printed copy. Cost for printing and shipping are about CHF 20,- which you can transfer via Paypal. I will ship to the address obtained via Paypal. Contact me on Fred Voorhorst if you want the book to ship to a different address. Note that this offer is for one copy, and as long as I have copies in stock. In case you like to receive more copies, please contact me first.

  • READ. Woodworking Know-How is a compilation of information not just from the lifetime I've spent woodworking, but also the thousands of conversations and experiences that I've had with accomplished craftsmen around the world. This is not just my own woodworking savvy, but also the useful, wonderful, and sometimes amazing knowledge and know-how that others have shared with me.

WATCH. Woodworking Demonstrations is a library of videos on a wide range of woodworking topics, including techniques, materials, technology, tool reviews, and craftsman interviews. These are presented in a unique "virtual classroom" format I developed especially for presenting demonstrations of craftsmanship online.

WORK. Woodworking Projects draws upon the hundreds of woodworking projects that I have drafted and written over the years. These projects range from classic furniture to yard art and include not just items that I have built, but also projects from craftsmen who have shared their designs and construction techniques with me.

DISCUSS. The Workshop Companion Forum is your opportunity to ask specific woodworking questions not just of my team and me, but also a wider audience of experienced craftsmen. If you are an experienced craftsman, this is your opportunity to share.

The Workshop Companion - The Complete Series DVD

The Field Notes Workshop Companion slotted in at #6 on my pre-journey to the Butcher Orange list of rankings based on appearance only. I don’t see it falling at all as my completed rankings take shape. If anything, it’ll likely move up into the top 5. It’s a great combination of sturdiness, usability, and textured feel. And while it’s a bit thicker than most Field Notes due to the weight of the paper, it still hides nicely in the back pocket, and I don’t feel it when I sit.
